Now I can't sleep all day

I got a parking ticket today, parked outside my own house. I mean, yes, I was breaking the law, though I didn't realize that having two wheels up on the edge of the sidewalk was illegal here. But! A ticket! Outside my own house! From a police force which doesn't bother to ticket speeding in school zones! O, the humanity, man.
At least I wasn't the only one on my street to get one, though; the whole length of it, you can see soggy strips of yellow carbonless paper stuck under people's windshield wipers. And there's something else, too, that makes me not care so deeply about my parking ticket which I will pay immediately because I do not want to spend another night in prison ever again, and that thing is that I HAVE A JOB. I got called for an interview from my new best friend Tori this morning, went into the office this afternoon, talked to them for 45 minutes, and within a half hour after my return home, they'd made an offer. I start Monday, can you believe it? I HAVE A JOB. Let me say it again, in case you've forgotten: I HAVE A JOB.

Date: 2006-09-07 11:11 pm (UTC)(and boo for the ticket, because...yes, I received a ticket in front of my very own house once, on the same night that the front door was left unlocked and open. Like...you'd think the cop - who lives a block away - might have checked to see if somebody was, you know, dead before worrying about the ticket *g*)

Date: 2006-09-07 11:22 pm (UTC)The worst thing, too, is that I think the police might even have knocked on my door to tell me to move my car. I heard the dogs barking at something while I was showering this morning, anyway, and I'd like to think that they would at least try to warn me before ticketing me in front of my own damn house.
Of course, I could just start using my carport, and the whole problem would be miraculously solved.

Date: 2006-09-07 11:29 pm (UTC)Congratulations to you! Give your new best friend Tori a hug for me and tell her she made a fine decision. Boo on the dumb ticket, but that really only diminishes the overall :D :D :D :D :Dness by :D or so.

Date: 2006-09-07 11:29 pm (UTC)Now, on to the important stuff ... did you say you'd spent a night in prison??

Date: 2006-09-07 11:42 pm (UTC)Hahahahahahaaa! Yes, I did, the Orleans Parish Prison (The OPP, we ex-cons call it). I was arrested for unpaid traffic violations, and spent the night first chained to a staggering drunk, then in a holding cell filled with prostitutes and drug addicts (and frequently both together), and then in a cell which a shared with a seasoned old pro who held my hand through the worst bits (in exchange, she got my soap, toothpaste, and toothbrush when I got bailed out).
It was the worst night of my entire life -- but, really weirdly, everybody was incredibly nice, from the police officers to the prisoners. It was pretty clear that I was completely freaked out, in my quiet way, by the whole thing, I suppose. People kept asking if I was a teacher; it's funny, the things you remember.

Yay!

Date: 2006-09-07 11:54 pm (UTC)I know two people who got jobs today -- Jen S. just got a designer position with Whole Foods. I hope she doesn't decide to give up her PT w/ Apple before I take advantage of her employee discount.

And Jen S! She gets the best jobs -- I take it Apple was not the wondrous experience she was hoping it would be, or was it only ever supposed to be temporary?
