Because I don't kill enough time online
Oct. 25th, 2007 01:52 pmI signed up today for NaBloPoMo. What possessed me, I hear you asking? Well. I had this thought in the back of my mind that committing to writing every day for a month would get me back into a habit I've been out of for several years now. (I'm thinking this is something like buying clothes two sizes too small as an incentive to lose weight, which everyone knows doesn't actually work, but.)
What can I say? I miss the days when I had something to say and was just happy to get it out there, floating around, whether anyone read it or not.
:::
My paid account recently lapsed, and I did know it had lapsed -- I am lazy and also poor -- but I only just realized that a basic account does not include image galleries, and now all my images are gone. I am kind of sick about this, since I had hundreds of images posted there, and I am so mad at livejournal I'm going to start hosting photos elsewhere, even if I do ever get around to renewing my account. So I have a question for you: Photobucket or Flickr, and why?

Date: 2007-10-25 08:16 pm (UTC)I'm sorry about your images going away. That really sucks, and I don't think LJ gives enough notice about that sort of thing. I have Photobucket and FlickR, and I think FlickR's the better bet. Not only is it speedier and more reliable (sometimes Photobucket takes naps for no apparent reason, leaving you with links going nowhere), but it's got all those networking options, too. FlickR just seems like the cool kid on the block. Plus there are those features

Date: 2007-10-26 04:47 pm (UTC)I can't imagine paying more than sixty dollars for jeans. Honestly? I try hard not to pay more than twenty-five for anything -- it's sort of a matter of principle for me -- though sometimes it's not possible to stay that low. Don't tell anyone!
Oh, lj gave me notice, but as does seem to be the case since I bought the house, I'm one step ahead of a zero bank balance this week, so it'll have to wait. :( Anyway, just kind of poking around flickr and looking at some of the addons and things, I'm excited about using it anyway; and I think it'll work fine for me regardless of whether I ever retrieve my stored lj photos. Thanks for the rec!

Date: 2007-10-27 05:06 am (UTC)I can't stomach paying over $60 for jeans, either. Heather, damn her, got me hooked on these Lucky jeans (with a hand-me-down pair), and now I crave them even though they're out of my price range. When I saw them for $32.99 at one of those depressing discount stores where the raincoats are jammed in right next to the "activewear", I nabbed 'em right quick. Who cares that they're a size and a half too small and about a mile too long? That's what starving and tailors are for!

Date: 2007-10-25 08:32 pm (UTC)I also use Flickr for RL photos! I agree about the uploadr and the tagging system. One thing though, is that if you don't get a paid account there, you can only upload a maximum of 200 photos, I believe. Well no that's a lie, you can upload more, but any photos over the 200 mark go into hiding. For every new photo you upload, the oldest photo in view goes into hiding. They're all still there but without the Pro account, you can't get 'em.
So you would probably be better with Photobucket? I have a couple of those, too, and for direct linking, etc, they are swell.

Date: 2007-10-26 04:50 pm (UTC)It'll take me a while to get to 200 photos on flickr, since I don't take as many photos as I should, but I'll keep the limit in mind. Maybe by the time I get to 200, I'll be able to swing a pro account!

Date: 2007-11-03 04:35 am (UTC)Of course if you don't want to pay, there is no reason why you couldn't just keep opening new free accounts, Tofty01, Tofty02, etc., to keep things all in line. I went for the paid account within two weeks because I am a database maniac and free accounts only get something like three sets.

Date: 2007-10-26 04:38 pm (UTC)i have a flickr account and i adore it, even though it's collecting dust until i buy a camera that's vista-compatible, so i can use it with sam the gay laptop. however, i don't know how i'd feel about storing pictures that didn't come off my camera on there. does that make sense? i mean, i upload a ton of really dumb pictures for my livejournal, like the unicorn one, and the hand gestures? and i wouldn't put them in my flickr account, although i'm sure some people do. and yet, using both photobucket and flickr seems like a lot of work! damn you, livejournal!

Date: 2007-10-26 04:56 pm (UTC)I probably would use flickr for the dumb stuff -- I have lots of it, too -- but maybe tagged? It's a good point, though, that I'll probably feel a little weird about it, especially about images that aren't mine. flickr seems much more public than other photo storage sites, doesn't it?
*shakes fist at lj, just because*
