   Me: Do you have a cord or a cable where both ends are earphone plugs?
   Electronics Dept Clerk: er...
   Me (hopefully): It's for plugging an mp3 player into a car stereo?
   EDP: Oh -- I don't know if we have them or not, but there might be some over there with the TV accessories. *waves hand in general direction of 1/2 the department*
   Me: Okay, thanks. *skulks off to spend next 20 minutes looking, does not find*



3. Adventures in Retail Shopping, Part Two; at [small retail electronics chain] during lunch:
   
   Me: Do you have a cord or a cable where both ends are earphone plugs?
   Clerk: *smiles* Yup. So do you have a new car or a new stereo?
   Me: :D A new car.
   Clerk: *displays choice of three* How long do you need it to be?
   Me: *____*



4. I have this fantasy that my entire friendslist will spontaneously write me classic novel/Stephen King crossover fanfic whilst I repair to Dallas for the weekend, because since laurelwood mentioned it, I cannot get it out of my head. I mean, haven't you ever wondered what Mary and Dickon and Colin might do when faced with an evil clown/spider? What advice Carrie might offer Cousin Bette (or vice versa)? What Jack Sawyer might say to Tom Sawyer (or, better, Huck Finn)? Well, start wondering, if you please.

Didn't see said post about Anne Lamott, but I saw her in a restaurant a few weeks ago. She's one of our local celebrities, I guess. I've never been a big fan, but part of that might be because everyone tried to shove her down my throat when I was in high school.

She seems to be a polarizing sort of author. So many people either adore her or loathe her. I don't hate her, exactly -- but I do find her writing to be facile and self-serving, and I found a comment someone wrote in a recent kind of starfucking interview on Salon to be kind of amusing in a really mean-spirited way, and so I copied it into an entry so I'd remember it.

That's no reason to subject everyone else to it, though! :)

Gosh it's refreshing when I see that there are people who still believe that meanspiritedness is a bad thing. : ) Nevertheless, am curious what you had to say about Anne Lamott. I've never read her - she just doesn't seem like someone who would appeal to me.

And yay for finding a rare pocket of good customer service. Almost like finding a four leaf clover.

Ah, well, I do feel badly about feeling meanspirited. Or at least, I actually feel that a little private expression of mean-spiritedness is cathartic and healthy, but tend to feel badly about my own public expressions -- though I don't necessarily mind other people's.

In a smallish city like mine, decent customer service seems to be easier to come by than it is in a big city, but still, it's always noteworthy to be treated like a human being. Sad but true.

Aww. Support your local small independent shops! We face a similar problem here in lots of retail areas where the giants are slowly easing their way into every market possible (including mine, which should be protected by the government because it's an actual healthcare service, but they see big bucks as important instead and we're struggling against the supermarkets).

I don't know if this is true on the other side of the world, but we've gotten to the point where the huge discount chains have gorged on all the independent businesses and are now going for the other huge discount chains! This smaller store I mention, it was actually pretty ubiquitous even a decade ago, but is slowly foundering in the land of super-cheap discount stores.
