I have things to do and I do them and then I find myself drifting back here to read a bit more, to see the portraits and to read the answers, but most of all to try and guess exactly which question they're answering. The big one, or something more specific? Something else entirely? I am feeling as though the question you're answering is even more revealing than how you're answering it.

What's your answer?

Because I've been there.

Um, I'm hungover and this makes my head hurt.

The first thing that comes to mind is: What else is there? That seems pretty bleak though. OK, another answer, also truthful and equally depressing: I don't know.

Do you gather I'm feeling pretty grim today? (Party was worth it though!)

Good morning, sunshine! :D Hope you're feeling better today.

I am! I'm usually an optimistic person so it was weird that such downbeat answers came to mind. I clearly wasn't in the right frame of mind to grapple with the meaning of life.

I hope you're well too! It's ages since we chatted properly.

My news: I have found myself a *het fandom*. How about that?

We'll have to set up a playdate sometime -- I am working fewer Saturdays lately, so I'm a little more available for meetups.

I'm very well, thanks -- a little allergic and living in squalor lately, must clean, but otherwise springtime is busting out all over round these parts.

Your het fandom is BSG? I saw your post and meant to comment on it! Kara/Lee is not my favorite pairing, but otherwise I agree with you; I love the pairings they've set up too much to want to slash them all up. (Adama/Roslin is my favorite canon pairing, for the record -- they are so restrainedly sexy together!)

Living in squalor lately... Tell me about it. My flat is filthy and my parents are visiting on Friday. I've forbidden them from showing up before 12 so I have time to clean. (I only ever clean when people are coming over.)

Yes, K/L, and I've tempted [livejournal.com profile] elanna9 (a new mother who's got better things to do) into it too which I feel a little guilty about.

It's so weird reading het fanfics. The ship conventions are entirely different - even though Kara isn't exactly a girly girl. Also the fics I've read are well written but quite tame and worthy so far. *Very* different from HP where any kink goes. I mean, I got into HP when the Snape Fuq-U-Fest was all the rage, you know. But maybe it's an HP thing rather than a slash/het thing, because I noticed something similar recently in a Red Dwarf comm I've been following. Someone posted a mildly kinky dubcon chapter of their wip and there was extended handwringing over whether the characters would EVER DO THIS TO EACH OTHER OMG. After 50-odd comments of this the writer retired, much chastened. LOL, in HP if you said it wasn't IC for Snape to shag a squid/puppy/preteen!Harry/whoever you'd be oppressing people's rights to enjoy whatever kink they damn well like, and even risk ending up on F_W. I didn't realise how much I'd got used to HP's "anything goes" culture, or how much I'd miss it, until I started reading in other more sedate fandoms.

Would love to chat, of course! I'm working this weekend though. How is your connection these days?

Well, I do see what you mean about slasherdom -- we have to stretch our characters farther out of shape than het fans, usually, so there's very little handwringing from us over would-they-or-wouldn't-they questions. But yeah, I think we've also been spoiled by HP, where there's something for every taste and most kinks were fought over years ago, and there are piles of fic to meet your every need, just about.

Though I think there are lots of holes in the Starbuck/Apollo ship that're crying out to be filled (OMG BAD HET PUN SORRY), my all-time fave pairings for fic are Tigh/Starbuck (Oh, that old enemy-pairing lure!) and Baltar/Six, both in their first-season dynamics; in any case, this is sort of a theoretical preference, because I haven't ventured too far into BSG fic to find out how many of these fics exist, and how satisfying those fics are. I've been spending most of my time lately rereading Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell and daydreaming about writing fic for that universe.

I would love to chat. This weekend isn't specially good for me either, as it happens -- I'll be out of town -- but my connection seems to be holding steady these days, so maybe in the next couple of weeks?

I've got a family weekend looming but I'll be home by Sunday evening. I'll look out for you then.

PS You're slashing Strange and Norrell??

From: [identity profile] tofty.livejournal.com
Well, if by slashing Strange and Norrell you mean writing Strange/Norrell slash, then HAHAHAHAHAH no I am not. (was there ever a character more asexual than Norrell? Though he does have a big ole crush on Strange, I admit.) But if by slashing Strange and Norrell you mean am I dwelling on some nice dub-con Stephen/Gentleman with Thistle-down Hair, well then. Or some little snippets of Arabella and Lady Pole at the fairy ball. Or some Jonathan Strange on the King's Roads. Or some Raven King anything. Or, you know, you get the picture. :D

See you Sunday! (I hope!)

Oh, and re Adama/Roslin, I loved the ep Unfinished Business for many reasons, but not the least of which was watching A/R getting high together.

It's great how BSG can have lovely, dignified UST like that, and the next minute be indulging in the Baltar/Six craziness.

I admit that the Baltar/Six of this season is not riveting me, though that threesome was a welcome surprise, wasn't it? :D But old-school Season One, man, I ate it up with a spoon. But! Yes, yes! I love that not only can it veer back and forth between such extremes, but also that it can set up UST between older characters at all in such a realistic way. Older characters usually aren't so lucky, or so three-dimensional.

Ooh, that site is so cool. And it fits right in with one of my Big Themes lately:

Because if I don't do it now, I'm afraid I never will.

I know. And I agree that the site is wonderful. I always do wonder about the answers people have for the big questions.
