I got the article today! I loved it (and I think it's the most I've ever read about Big Star in one place ever), and you were splendid to send it to me, and! New album coming out this summer! I don't know whether to be excited or nervous, and so, predictably, I'm both.

Thank you, thank you!

Much love,

me

Oh good! (Man, that was slow mail delivery, though.) I'm so glad you enjoyed it and that it was legible. It was the most complete Big Star article I'd ever seen too, and then I got to the end and noticed that the author has an entire BOOK coming out on the band.

I'm sure I'll buy the new album, but yeah, I'm excited and nervous at the same time as well.

Also! Chris Stamey is touring! (Do you like Chris Stamey?) For the first time in at least ten years! It's a good month for power pop.

I love Chris Stamey, and I had no idea he was touring--and also I love that he's The Chris Stamey Experience! I found an old LP of his a few weeks ago, as a matter of fact, and was completely thrilled, and I would love to see him. Maybe I can take the weekend off and go to NC for a road trip!

Also, now that you've read it, I can say that I really can't believe that you couldn't get heroin in Memphis in the 70s. All things considered, though, it's clearly a good thing that Alex Chilton didn't manage to get his hands on any.

Hahahahaha, he certainly managed to make up for the lack, didn't he, though?

I met him twice, did I ever tell you? Both times, he was nice enough to us dazzled giddy twentysomethings, but overall a little bored, I think.

Oh my goodness, yes. I don't know why shooting Demerol down his throat *with a syringe* sounds so much more depraved than just taking Demerol, but it does, doesn't it?

I met him twice, did I ever tell you?

No! I knew you'd seen him perform. My spouse saw him once in the late 80s and said it was awful ("A friend of mine said, 'don't go. just mail Chilton the eight dollars.' He was right."). But reviews I read of shows he's done in the last ten years were much more positive.

Here's a link to Chris Stamey (http://www.yeproc.com/artist_info.php?artistId=340). It doesn't look as if he's going any farther south than North Carolina, which is odd; you'd think he'd play Atlanta, at least.

YES IT DOES. It sounds like something out of trainspotting. Like something Courtney Love would do, which is the most depraved comparison I can make.

Since he's from my neck of the woods, I've seen AC lots of times. And his performances can be really hit-and-miss (I've seen him walk onstage with a cheeseburger and fries, and things just deteriorated from there), but when he's on-form, he's terrific, and since he cleaned up, he's on-form a whole lot more.

I think you should write to Christ Stamey and suggest adding an Atlanta date. And I will do the same, and we will have achieved a bloc. Surely he will listen to us! And then I will not have to consider driving for six hours to see him.
