Did you know that black dogs are, statistically speaking, the most likely to be left unadopted at animal shelters and adoption fairs? It's true, and I know it's true because The Bark, my authority on all things canine (as well as, let's not forget, the home of the world's best masthead slogan), says so. I found myself utterly astonished by this sad news, not only because I didn't realize, though I suppose I should have, that people are not only biased in favor of purebreds when it comes to the dogs they take in, but also have color prejudices. Not only that, I say, but also because a good 85% the dogs I have loved best in the world are big and black, and entirely splendid, and on that account I have a decided bias in favor of the BBD, as they're called, my own self.

So I just want to say, Attention, dog shelters of the world: when my ship comes in and I'm able to start my animal sanctuary, I pledge to do my part to upend this statistic. Bring me your tired, your poor, your BBDs, and I will take them in and love them without reservation, because Big Black Dogs, they rock, man, and don't you forget it.

:::

I've spent the last couple of weeks--that part not devoted to composing heartfelt love songs to black dogs--feverishly downloading and watching Battlestar Galactica, from the beginning to the season 2 finale, which means that I'm now up-to-date and waiting impatiently for the new season. And oh, I do adore it so. With only a couple of exceptions, I've never been a huge fan of science fiction television, but BSG just caught me right up, and even during the scattershot doldrums of mid-second-season never quite lost me. And the season finale: God. I mean, what kind of unholy chutzpah does it take to build a television series over two seasons from an existing--and much-beloved--mythology, and then just systematically and without warning completely dismantle it? Next season, we'll be watching a whole different show, with, apparently, an entirely different aesthetic. Different goals. Beloved characters who're familiar, but who're clearly going to be changed significantly when we see them again.

I have my favorite characters, my favorite episodes, my favorite story arcs, but it almost seems pointless to discuss them here because the show's been stripped bare by her bachelors, even, and what's coming next is not anything you can really extrapolate cleanly from everything that came before.

But oh, man. Just think of all the fanfiction you can cram into that lost year. Because how many fans of the show are going to be able to wait patiently to find out what happened to make that final twenty minutes possible? Let's all write something, okay? Please?

ETA: By the way, I would like you to take note of the nested not-only-but-also statements in that first paragraph. Kids, don't try this at home.

Oh- and if the inherent personality/external beauty fabulousness of black dogs wasn't enough, here's a shallow reason to love them (inspired by a just-now embrace of a copiously shedding white rabbit): whose hair's gonna show up on your nice black trousers, huh? Hair from a BBD, or that of his lighter-haired brethren?

Ahahahahahaha I have one pair of black sateen pants that would be particularly nightmarish if I had a nice fawn-colored dog The black dog hair--well, you can still see it, but it's not nearly so bad.
