Today, for the first time ever, I paid more than two dollars a gallon for gas.

I was reading a profile of a ten-year-old boy named Colin Duffy the other night, and in it he guessed that the best thing about being an adult was that you could drive, and this meant that you could get in your car any time at all and drive to the store to buy candy. When I read this, I thought to myself, You know what? Being able to drive to get candy any time you want--well, it might not be the absolute best-with-a-cherry-on-top thing about being a grownup, but it's way up there. Until now. From now on, every time I hop in my car to drive the five miles to the nearest store that sells candy, I will be thinking, Just how much money is it going to cost me this time???

I have news for you, Colin Duffy. Sometimes, being a grownup just sucks, and not even unlimited access to candy makes it better.

You know, I often celebrate the easy access to candy, probably because I still recall so clearly the my perilous adventure of sneaking out of the house with a fistful of nickels to walk four blocks and cross two busy streets to get to the convenience store. (And then getting busted later- a pox upon ye, watermelon wacky wafers, for making my tongue day-glo red!)

These gas prices, though, are seriously depressing. I almost got into an accident today, rubbernecking at a sign that had THREE as the first number in a gas price. It was full-serve, but man. I see that road trip I'm lusting after disappearing in a puff of exhaust.

Word. I pass a gas station on my way home every day where gas, REGULAR UNLEADED GAS, is up to $2.21 a gallon. Granted, it is a gas station out in the middle of nowhere, so people who have to stop there are going to pay that price regardless, but. $2.21! That is FOUR CANDY BARS.

Last summer in San Francisco, regular unleaded was going for 2.35 a gallon. The only thing that made it okay was that California cars -- and maybe I was imagining this -- seem to get about 30 percent better gas mileage than the ones I am used to.

I blame Halliburton and Dick Cheney, myself. Oh, and let's not forget Karl "SATAN" Rove. GW's just their mindless minion.

Also, I just picked up a copy of Uncut Magazine because there is a long article (with never before seen photos!) about Big Star. My scanner's not that good, but if you're interested, I could make color copies of the article and send it to you. Just let me know.
