I am going to be seeing Serenity one day soon, maybe this week, maybe next, and since I've never seen Firefly at all, I downloaded the series and have gotten about two-thirds of the way through.

And at first, I am afraid that I did not see what so many of you on my friendslist saw in it, and I went in expecting to be extra-happy with it (and therefore I was extra-willing to give it a chance). I sat through the first few episodes disappointed, and then I had an epiphany that went something like this: yeah, okay, I kind of like the characters and the conceit is interesting but as far as execution, it seems a little ohhhhhhhhhhh okay I get it.

So I'm officially converted, I guess. It starts slow, sure, but it ends up every bit as clever and funny and morally ambiguous and strangely touching as one would expect something springing fully-formed from the forehead of Joss Whedon to be. And I really do like all of the main characters very much, but OMG is there anyone as wonderful in the whole wide world, as perfect, as Jayne?

Do not bother answering that question. I think we all know perfectly well that there is not.

He robbed from the rich
And he gave to the poor
Stood up to the man
And he gave him what for
Our love for him now
Ain't hard to explain
The Hero of Canton
The man they call Jayne...

Now here is what separates heroes
From common folk like you and I!

OMG, I'm now going to repeat the conversation Chris and I had when I came home to discover there was a Firefly marathon on the Sci-fi Channel while I was at work:
Me: Firefly! And I missed most of it! Darn it, why'd I have to get a job?
Chris: You're an idiot.
But he doesn't know. He doesn't know the love.

You have got to be indoctrinated properly to The Love, I feel. It isn't enough to watch an episode here and there; you must experience the marathon effect to appreciate it. It is like the Cultural Revolution, in that way.

I'm still in the it seems a little... part, but I haven't watched many episodes.

It didn't really start to pick up for me, I guess, until Our Mrs. Reynolds, and Jaynestown was where things really turned around.

Oh, Firefly. The Pilot wasn't all that good, but some of the other episodes? I stayed up until 6AM watching them compulsively. <3

By the way. Keri and I were talking last night about how surprised we were that you're a Jayne girl.

I surprise myself by being such a Jaynegirl, really. He's not my usual type, but honestly, I just adore him. Maybe it's because he's (mostly) so completely unapologetic about being an amoral dumbass, or maybe it's the occasional glimpses you get that he's not so bad in places, or maybe it's just that I've always thought that Adam Baldwin was ridiculously hot. Probably it's a muddy mixture of all those things. But goddamn. Again: <3333333333!

Yeah, that's pretty much how it went for me. Eh? Ohhh. Right! Though I will never be as fond of it as I am of Buffy and Angel.

Serenity opens this w/e in London and I will go.

It is tonight or never for me--I'm gearing up for a late show.

I think I acutally like Firefly best, now. Technically, I guess the other two shows were better (because, I feel, Firefly never had a chance to hit its stride really well), but I just like all the main characters so very much! And although I love a lot of the supporting characters in Buffy and Angel, I was never all that crazy about the title characters, which kind of spoiled things for me to a certain degree.

I never cared much for Buffy the character, and I was lukewarm about Angel too (all that brooding - so tedious!) until he got his own show. A friend bought me the first series of Angel for Christmas and I watched it again and was even more impressed the second time round. Buffy was loads of fun and I loved it, but I reckon Angel was the better show.

I'm going to see Serenity tomorrow - can't wait!

I've never seen any of it, but... *hides* I'm not a Joss Whedon fan.
