I was going to write a big bullet-pointed post, about many far-flung topics, but instead I am going to go to bed because I am tired and (for reasons which I will explain later) also sore and headachy. Instead of rattling on, I am just going to say, quickly, HI I MISS YOU, and then go on to write a brief open letter.

Dear Michael Bay,

You had a chance to make The Island a smart and edgy film, and there were several places within its framework that you could have veered off into another direction and seamlessly directed it away from the shallow fugitive film it turned into.

You could have, but you didn't, and I am so glad. It was much more fun this way. And the stars were so unbelieveably gorgeous that the less in the way of plot or sense or cleverness to distract, really, the better.

Good call.

Love,

me.

PS The scene with the nail gun holy shit dude.

Aha, thank you for posting this! The reviews have been fairly bad but I was wondering if it was worth sneaking off to see it anyway. Tomorrow's my first day off in ages and an afternoon of leering at Ewan will cheer me up no end.

I am tired and (for reasons which I will explain later) also sore and headachy. You're not ill are you? :-/

Oh, yes, I think as long as you can ignore the fact that it's completely brainles, you'll have a blast. Not only are Ewan MacGregor and Scarlett Johansson amazing-looking, but as an added bonus, so are Sean Bean and Djimon Hounsou, and really, the rest of the film as well. There's a little cameo of Steve Buscemi to keep you happy as well, if you're into that kind of thing. What's not to like?

And I'm not ill, no. I choked in a restaurant on Friday night, and yesterday I was feeling pretty battered. It's amazing the muscles you strain when you're choking--I had no idea!

I hope you've recovered now. And you were dead right about The Island. It was flimsy and flash, and very enjoyable, and just what I needed.

Have you read True Enough by Stephen McCauley? It's been making me *look forward* to my daily commute on the Tube this week - a minor miracle in these current, tense circumstances - and I've thought, several times, I bet T would like this!

Ooooh! I've seen it at work and not picked it up--but next time I'm in the store, I'll take a look. Thanks for the rec!

Are you working this weekend? Will you be around for a chat? I've been thinking about you in London, and hoping you're hanging in there.

You're welcome. I was ordering some books for a friend's birthday on Amazon today, and I stuck Sarah Caudwell's first novel on the list for me :D.

I am finally not working on a weekend, so yes I'm around and would love to chat :D :D :D . I can log on at about 6ish my time on Sunday. We're still on British Summer Time, but I don't know what you're on. How does that sound?

AAAAAAAHHHHHH

I am going to Atlanta with a crew of people for lunch! I won't be back until midafternoon, I think. Since we're on summer time as well, I think we're still five hours behind, so if I get back around 3pm, that would be evening-ish your time.

:(:(:(:(:(

I hope you'll be able to log on a little later, but I'll understand if you can't.

That's OK. I've logged on to YM now, and I'll just read my friends' list and stuff and see if you turn up.

I miss you too. Really though, it's only been about 12 hours since I've seen you. You've got to let go.

You think you are so funny, but I do miss you already! I was telling Liz last night that B&N won't be the same without you.

My sister and I both screamed when the nail gun thing happened. The people in front of us and all around us were substantially less impressed, but the NAIL GUN with the THING and the dude was so NONCHALANT ABOUT IT AFTERWARDS.

I KNOW. Throughout that scene, I felt exactly the same way I do when I go to the eye doctor and they puff that air into your eyes-- squinting and jerking back involuntarily with fear until they end up having to put novocaine in your eyes to tell whether or not you have glaucoma.

Yeah, you know, shoot all the people you want with guns, but get out that nail gun and I freak. I distinctly remember this being the case with other movies as well.
