And the other major time-suck in my life is this: just before Christmas, our server at work crashed in a really spectacular way, and I spent many perfectly miserable seventy-hour weeks first trying just to get us through the crisis, and then upgrading all the equipment and procedures, and then migrating everything, and then catching everyone else up, then catching myself up. Until recently, I wasn't entirely certain I'd ever see daylight again for more than ten minutes at a stretch.

But now things are more or less caught up. There are a few odds and ends left to clear up -- the foot-high stack of loose papers to be filed at my earliest convenience which should be about April, the resetting of users on our domain, the report which was lost forever and which NOTHING I CAN DO WILL EVER MAKE IT EXACTLY RIGHT FOR ITS PRIMARY USER HOLY FUCKING SHIT I AM TIRED OF LOOKING AT THAT REPORT -- but things are seriously looking up. Last weekend was the first weekend since Christmas, for example, that I was able to not work at all, either at the office or telecommuting from home. And it was a stupidly good weekend.

And so I've been leaning back a little, you know? Spending a little less time hunched over my computer like this and a little more time feeling like an actual human being with an actual life. Which turns out to have been a big mistake, because you get too complacent and the universe doesn't like it; it smacks you upside the head hard enough to knock you on the floor.

That is to say: yesterday my boss called and asked me if the Internet was down, and it was, and while usually it's not such a big deal -- just a simple router reboot -- yesterday restarting the router didn't help, and it turned out that the line was completely down, and after staying on the phone with tech support until 6pm, they said the fix couldn't be made from their end and they'd send someone out this morning, and this entry is already a little long and I haven't even gotten to the good part yet, so let me just wrap it up by saying that after a day of waiting anxiously for a tech who never came and fielding calls literally every ten minutes from my coworkers who are like six-year-olds in a car when it comes to internet and email with the are-we-there-yet-are-we-there-yet, I have come up with a plan of revenge for AT&T: every time someone calls me tomorrow, I am going to call our rep with another repair request. I mean, if the (I think) six calls I made today weren't enough to make an impression, maybe ten times that many calls will.

One can only hope. And now I gotta go. I have to check my work email.

I've had more and more time off lately, so I'm absolutely getting there. :D
