I don't think the SSRIs are working any more.

I've been making a Christmas CD as office gifts for my coworkers. Since they're for the most part older than I am, and to a person infinitely more conservative than I am, I've been limiting myself to the more traditional parts of my Christmas music while choosing a playlist; and as an antidote I've been breaking by listening to the indie-type stuff.

At some point during one of these breaks, I realized that a lot of the indie-type stuff is kind of, well. It's a downer, is what, whether it's whiny my-baby-left-me or just fucked in the head (although some of it's so over-the-top, purposefully or not, that it kind of crosses back over into festive and fun again).

Generations X and Y have some issues to work through as regards the holiday season, it seems.

I recommend you get drunk before listening.

I still have the one you sent out in 2004 (I think)! Collector's item! :D

(By which I mean I think it was from 2004, not that I think I have it.)

[identity profile] tofty.livejournal.com 2008-12-14 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha, you're one step ahead of me, then! I know for a fact that there are some songs on that collection that I don't have any more.

I think there are few overlaps on that one and this one, though. I mean, I only have so much depressing Christmas music!

[identity profile] amelia-eve.livejournal.com 2008-12-14 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
Chugging that download right now. But you know what? The Cocteau Twins' Frosty the Snowman is really lovely. Their music sounds all tinkly and icy anyway so it's great for something so wintry.

[identity profile] tofty.livejournal.com 2008-12-14 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, I love that one, and they do a fantastic "Winter Wonderland" as well. I didn't mean to imply that there aren't some wonderful, surprisingly sincere, unironically festive indie Christmas songs out there -- I even have some of them! -- it's just that putting them in this collection would've spoiled the joke. :D

Cammy! I just had a night full of Christmas cheer to the max, and while it was lovely, I feel like I need some kind of balance now. So this is perfect. Thank you!

[identity profile] tofty.livejournal.com 2008-12-14 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahahaha, well, if you were looking for the opposite of festive then I think this just might fit the bill. :*

[identity profile] kickthebeat.livejournal.com 2008-12-14 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
!!!! taking like a mofo. i'll use it to counter-balance all the saccharine music i'm sure to hear between now and christmas. THANKS, BABY.

YOU ARE MOST WELCOME.

[identity profile] resonant8.livejournal.com 2008-12-14 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
If you took more of a pop approach, you could get ten thousand variations on "Baby, if you'd date me, it would be a good Christmas, but otherwise nope." And also that last Christmas, I gave you my heart song that everybody has recorded, and which I swear only has about twelve words.

OTOH, if you want to be utterly traditional, you can have songs about how to keep a baby from being murdered by Herod; lots of foreshadowing of the crucifixion and comparing red things to blood; and big crowds of random drunken people demanding figgy pudding, so.

I am suddenly really liking the idea of having a "Man, This Christmas Really Blows" playlist meme, where everyone I know puts one together using the genre of her choice. I respectfully request from you the Utterly Traditional Babykilling and Blood Genre, if you feel you have the time! :D

[identity profile] tofty.livejournal.com 2008-12-14 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, I think I could come up with a decent country mix, given the time and assuming I could mix traditional and alt-country genres.

It's downloading now. I can't wait to listen!!

Here via [livejournal.com profile] resonant8, and downloading. :)

You know, whenever I'm in a bar with a jukebox in December I put on "Fairytale of New York" because it makes me snicker.

[identity profile] tofty.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yay, I'm glad you're downloading! "Fairytale of New York" is a song I'm compelled to sing along to regardless of where I am or what I'm doing, which has made for some interesting moments in my life. :D

"You scumbag, you maggot, you cheap lousy faggot!"

EXACTLY.

This is MARVELOUS.

In fact, would you mind if I borrowed it to make office gifts for MY coworkers? They are...different from yours! I will give you all credit, of course.

You're most welcome! Hope you enjoyed it!

(And I'm really sorry it's taken me this long to reply -- I only just realized that I hadn't seen this before.)

I just found your collection and love it. As it's January by now that's saying something.
Do you know the Christmas album by Low? That's my personal depressing Christmas favorite. You might like it. (listen (http://www.imeem.com/people/9xZl_VX//music/M90Tk8fK/low_if_you_were_born_today/)). Next year, that is. ;)
Thanks for uploading!

Ohhh. Thank you, I love Low! I didn't know they'd put out a Christmas album. Like so many of the above, it doesn't really seem like their style.
