So if you're anything like me, it has often occurred to you to wonder, in between rounds of reading porn on the internet, what happens to a sheet of plaster three feet long, two feet wide, and three quarters of an inch thick when it falls from a height of eleven feet.







Also, here's a gratuitous picture of the dog post-cleanup, because the camera was already out and because he was sitting so sweetly without even being asked. Amazing.

Luckily, I was at work when it happened. Evidence points to the pets spending most of the day either lounging in my bed or sleeping in the sunroom when I'm out. When I'm at home, I spend 90% of my waking time sitting about three feet away from that spot, and the dog sometimes sleeps directly under it, so I'm very grateful it happened while I was out.

There's a leak in the roof. It's been dry here for a long time, but a couple of weeks ago we got several inches of rain in a single weekend, and the water soaked into and softened the plaster. It took a week or so to actually fall.

The floors are very scuffed and scratched, especially in the front room here, which gets more traffic than anywhere else. One day, I'm going to get them fixed up, but in the meantime, it's kind of nice to have floors that I don't have to be obsessive-compulsive about. And I love my French doors without reservation.

I'm so sorry your plaster decided to free itself from the ceiling! Lath and plaster is so much more beautiful than sheetrock, but oyyyyy, what a pain in the ass it is. We had our entire interior replastered right before Zoe was born, and now, just 10 years later, it's a network of cracks again. I'm very, very glad nobody was under that chunk when it made a break for the floor!

Leory is just gorgeous, isn't he? So glossy and happy-looking! You'd think, looking at that picture, that he spends his life posing, but I know he's usually a blur when you get the camera out.

I am SO NOT LOOKING FORWARD to getting estimates for repairs. Is this sort of thing covered by homeowner's insurance? Guess I need to find out. Most of my plaster is in pretty good shape, but besides this spot there are a few other places in need of repair, and plastering isn't something I feel I can tackle on my own -- seems like it's a dying art, too, which means expensive. :((

It really is gratifying when Leory sits still for me to take pictures! I think in this case he was a little freaked out by the falling sky, and also by my teeth-grinding and fuming. I maybe should fume and arrange more household disasters to keep him tractable. Or maybe I should make a chart first, measuring the advantages to keeping Leory freaked out against the disadvantages of having to make household repairs on a weekly basis.
