There's really nothing reasonable I can say. I am still very much a Dean girl, and well, I agree with the no comparison thing. It is a cruel, cruel thing that we have to wait until January.

I TOTALLY AGREE. And so, probably, does my one friend with whom I discuss the show. I'm sure she feels her heart sink every time she sees a 3000 word email from me in her inbox. Though of course no new canon means a break from OMG DID YOU SEE WHAT DO YOU THINK IT MEANS.

OH MY GOD. I just tried to reply to you and wrote you this tl;dr screed and the internet kicked out at that moment. Will recreate, but try to keep it not quite so long.

I'm not so hot at guessing games, or advancing theories that I expect will actually lead anywhere. I guess my favorite thing is to come up with endless what-if garden-of-forking-paths scenarios, and if one comes to pass, it's cool, and if nothing ever does, then that's cool too. It's how I rolled with HP as well, with anything I love as hard as I do this: just crazily invested, but not invested in a single pet outcome, you know? I like to be along for the ride, and to be surprised when I'm supposed to be.

Still, though, coming away from 410, I'm playing in particular with three ideas.

1. There's now an angel -- a rebel angel whose influence and position are entirely uncertain, but an angel nonetheless -- who has a great deal of empathy for Dean's humanity, and some idea of Sam and Ruby as at least not completely dark; I'm hoping this will be a thing to work in Dean's favor in the coming months.



2. Ruby's backstory is so deliberately obscure, and Sam so frustratingly incurious about it (at least as far as we know), that I feel sure it's going to mean something big in upcoming episodes. Also that it will lead to a major confrontation. I have no idea whether Ruby is actually evil or if she's truly working for the greater good (I'm pulling more for the former, though I feel the show is currently steering me toward the latter), but I do feel pretty strongly that Ruby's role as catalyst isn't done. That we haven't even seen the important bits yet.



3. Sam and Dean, for all that they're coming apart as individuals and as partners, are more determined (IMO) than they ever have been before to keep it together. They're willing to sidestep issues and tamp down confrontations that I think they'd never have bypassed before; on one hand, it enables them to stick together, but on the other, it's driving visible wedges between them. The show's been careful, I think, to keep the balance here, not overplay one against the other; it's a more subtle kind of dynamic than I'm used to seeing on the show, and I'm wondering if maybe the thing I've been kind of expecting since 401 (Sam and Dean's growing rift leading to their separation before a reconciliation, which I have to admit would BREAK MY HEART INTO A MILLION PIECES) isn't going to happen at all -- that instead, we might get something that I've been dreaming about happening: that Sam and Dean will never disintegrate, that they'll keep knitting the unraveling threads together until they have something different but stronger, and that they'll never stop having each other's backs.

Er, see what I mean? Once I get started, it's hard for me to stop, and that's not even counting the less likely scenarios and dynamics I've come up with -- the ones that fall under the category of Things I Better Write (Or Read) Because I'm Not Gonna See Them Otherwise -- and the questions I have at the end of each episode. (Ex: WHAT did Ruby mean when she told Sam he knew what he needed to do to ramp his powers back up? WHY did Dean remove his amulet before the Back Scene? (I have a little sort of aesthetic idea about this, but I'm wondering if there's something more important at stake as well.))

Hm! Hm! Oh man. Firstly, I really like your approach to speculation, I think it takes away a lot from the actual enjoyment to have an OTP (One True Plot) which you expect to come true. Also, I think, Kripke will surprise us all, for better or for worse.

1) I like that one a lot, and I haven't thought about it this way, but you may be right that she will become important soon. The Dean having sex with an angel and Sam having sex with a demon thing wasn't very subtle :). I hope Kripke doesn't just forget about her. And I agree about the amulet! Maybe it has no meaning (although I doubt that). What is your little idead about it, if you don't mind sharing?

2) True! True! I just don't knoooow. What was the deal with her and Alistair? And, yes, what does she want Sam to do to train?

3) Oh, oh. This is the big issue, isn't it. I can't bear to think about Evil!Sam vs. Good!Dean, some sort of epic battle between them, because it would be a) facile, b) not the Winchester way of doing things. I think you are right, I think they will find a third way: both of them will accept things about the other they don't accept now, and then they'll ride away towards the sunset, vigilantes always. HAHAHA. No, seriously.

4) Also, will they make Castiel choose a side? What is the deal with the relationship between him and Uriel? In the long run, is Lilith coming back and getting some action on-screen? Will she manage to open the 66 seals?

(1) Hee! I've grown accustomed to the show's lack of subtlety, so I never really expect it -- makes it kind of a nice surprise when they actually do manage it -- and so the bookends of the Sam/Dean sex scenes were kind of a pleasure for me rather than otherwise. My little idea is really very little, and just a (semi-) subtle reinforcement of the contrast, that where Sam's sex scene was all about Dean, even with Dean gone and Ruby right there, Dean's is an assertion of independence from Sam. I think there're various reason Dean could make a gesture like that, and I wonder what, if anything, the show has in mind.

(2) Yeah, what was the deal with Alistair? Well, specifically, why did the angels seem surprised that they couldn't just smite him with a touch and be done with him? And what was with the Latin chant? WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN I ASK YOU.

(4) I've wondered about Castiel, too, obviously: why give him doubts if the show isn't planning on going anywhere with them? Then again, the show has tossed us red herrings before -- Croatoan, for example -- so I can only hope that they're planning on actually doing something with Castiel as the season goes on. And Lilith too, who's playing a surprisingly tiny role in the season so far. And that's not to mention Azazel, whose overarching Plan has yet to be revealed. Does it have anything to do with Lilith, or is it a totally separate story?

Man, they better start answering questions or my head is going to explode.
