I meant to spend the rest of the evening yesterday (after I ascended from the depths of my crawlspace) reorganizing my biggish spare room, but I didn't, because you remember the post in which I asked for comics recs? Well, I found a service that will send you out comics scans for a nominal fee, and as of yesterday I am the proud owner of over 13 GB of scans, including most of the comics you all recommended (except for a few of the more obscure ones) and a few more besides.

And so I spent about four hours last night obsessively reading The Books of Magic, because I am a sucker for bespectacled teenage magicians, and plan to spend more time tonight doing the same. And I have company coming in three weeks for the Harry Potter release, and I should really spend that time making sure that living conditions are generally hospitable, but I'm very much afraid that when [livejournal.com profile] octoberstory and [livejournal.com profile] fieldreporter arrive, I'll be forced to wade through piles of clothes and rubbish to answer the door on account of having spent every spare minute of every day in front of my computer screen.

And there are other things to prevent me from doing what needs to be done! The arrival of Thomas Tryon's The Other. A Game of Thrones to finish still (though I may have to read this one first, as I'm having trouble keeping track of everyone, in the first chapters of the audio). The completion of the final episodes of Battlestar Galactica and the first season of Supernatural. I mean! At this rate, I'll be lucky if, when [livejournal.com profile] octoberstory and [livejournal.com profile] fieldreporter arrive, I haven't just melted permanently into my desk chair.

Oh man, I saw the film version of The Other as a teen and it was about the scariest movie I can remember. I'm sure it would not be as thrilling now, but at the time it chilled me completely. I didn't like the book as well, though. I think Tryon's Harvest Home was much creepier as a book. I think it was made into a TV movie with Bette Davis, but I never saw that.

You have my sympathy on the organizational front. My whole apartment is a festering hole, but it's so much nicer just to surf the net instead of cleaning.

I Netflixed The Other recently, and it's really not as chilling as it was when I was young. I enjoyed the rereading of the book (which I wished I could've sent to Tofty, but it was a 70s-era paperback and fell apart as I was reading it) even more than I did way back then. And oh, how cool- right in the middle of the rewatching/rereading days, I happened to receive a small, cylindrical gift wrapped in blue tissue paper. Creepy fun coincidence! (It was lovely ink, though, not... the other. :D )

THAT IS NOT A SPOILER IS IT?! If it is, then don't tell me!

I think the entirety of the last ten years or so of my life can be summed up this way. Quel tragedie! If it weren't for company to straighten me up every now and then, my house would be horrific beyond all comprehension.

I've never read The Other before, but Laurel's description of it sounded like something I was in the mood for -- of course, it came at the same time as all those comics, and there's Harry Potter in THREE WEEKS OMFG, so I'm not sure when it'll get read.

Oh, hey! You got The Other! How cool- I can't wait to see what you think of it.

I totally commiserate with the "I wanna read/surf all day but there are things! to be done!" dilemma. I haven't any houseguests to prepare for (more's the pity), but why is it that all the best books, movies etc. all come raining down when the children (who are modern children and thus haven't developed "amuse yourSELF" summer coping skills) are out of school?

Yes -- your description of it inspired me to see if I could find a copy! I'm really looking forward to reading it.

I was kind of astonished that these things, which weren't ordered at the same time AT ALL, arrived on the same day so that I am now faced with an agony of indecision as to what comes next. Oh well, all my choices should be agonizing in this way -- here's to living life with the thrill of new books to read at the end of the day when it's finally quiet.

I KNOW. I am under all this pressure -- you are such an exacting housekeeper that you make me all nervous! And plus of course you have only ever seen my living spaces at their absolute most pristine and unterrifying.

I was telling the palmetto bug story just this morning, actually.

I love the palmetto bug story, OMGGGGG.

C(screaming, swatting at breadloaf-sized insects trundling up curtains, across floor, etc.): I AM SO SORRY

A and J(screaming, jumping up on sofa): IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT; NEVERTHELESS, WE MUST VOMIT AND DIE NOW

*hugs you* Your old house was a good old house. It wasn't its fault it lived in New Orleans, Bug Capital of Southeast. And anyways, we would brave many times that number of vermin to see you. ♥

Well, I haven't seen anything like it BEFORE OR SINCE, outside of a horror film. So with any luck you won't have to this time round.

OMG AMY I HAVE SEEN THE BSG S3 FINALE WE HAVE TO TALK.
