Tidings in this dark hour

Okay, so remember how I said that I tipped a coke into my laptop but it came through the ordeal? Well. It did not. On Sunday, without warning, it went all haywire on me and the display fizzled and since that time I've had no computer at home. Don't know when I will have one, either, though I'm working on it, but in the interim, I'll be online/answering comments somewhat spottily, depending on what I have to do at work.

I miss you already.

Oh, no! :/ That sucks shit through a bendy straw. Are you having to get a new laptop, or can yours be repaired (I hope)?

A new laptop was never really in the picture (in fact, it may never be again, since Windows Vista casts me into grand unholy fits of fury). I've ordered a duplicate of my old one and will cannibalize the ruined one and put together what I hope will be pretty much an unchanged pc.

Plus my dad has given me his old laptop, in the meantime. Soon I will have two laptops, I am that deluxe.

Nooooooo! I was so hoping the laptop would continue to act as impervious as it started out doing. Please let me know if this spells eternal beans and rice- I can at least send cookies or something to feel useful.

My condolences, and I'll keep my fingers crossed that a (cheap!) solution or repair can be had ASAP. I'll miss you desperately!

beans and rice for a bit, but by no means for months on end! And I'm back already -- you've no doubt been so busy with Phoebe that you've barely had time to check your friendslist! But I'm glad to be back and to see your cranky octopus. I missed you very much!

Oh, that sucks. I'm really sorry to hear that. I hope you're back soon.

Here I am! I think I owe you some comments, too. How are you, my dear?

[identity profile] dahlia-777.livejournal.com 2007-05-22 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, so you are now overwhelmed by laptops? Good news :D.

I've not been well lately which is why I've been keeping a low profile. The upside is I've been doing a lot of reading so when I'm up to it I can write a book post.

[identity profile] tofty.livejournal.com 2007-05-22 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, no. I'm very, very sorry to hear that you haven't been well. *hugs you in gingerly fashion* I hope you're mending now -- and I'm also looking forward to your book post. I always love reading what you have to say about books, especially since we share so many tastes!

Perhaps I'll be up to it over the weekend. Although I have to work then so, hmm.

Btw I could do with your advice about something. A foreign language HP site has stuck up a translation of one of my fics without permish. I've sent a polite message to the translator and when I got no reply one to the beta as well. If they ignore my request to take the fic down is there anything else I could do? There are loads of HP writers on the site, including several on my flist, so I'm wondering whether to post about it and gauge reaction? Most people like their fics getting translated, anyway.

PS You know how I said I was going to read nothing but HP fics until the last book came out? I've spent the last month reading nothing but House fics...

[identity profile] tofty.livejournal.com 2007-05-23 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Well! Nothing but House fics, you say? *defriends*

Here's what I'd probably do in your situation: post a friendly note on my lj saying that I'm not very comfortable with my work being anywhere but on my own site, and someone's posted one of my fics in translation, and that the translator (I'd name both him/her and the site as well) hasn't responded, and does anyone know the translator to get in touch with her? Or does anyone have any further advice?

That's what I'd do, anyway.

That's good advice. I'll post openly not just to my friends' list, I think.

You know how you read a couple of fics in some fandom on a whim, and then can't stop for weeks? That's what it's like. Luckily all the writers seem quite polite about warning for spoilers and sticking all episode discussions under cut tags, because we're way behind with the series here.

Do I ever! It's been a long time for me, though. I need to find me a new fandom to love, I guess.
