I've missed the last few episodes of Battlestar Galactica. I have to admit that this mid-season is trying my patience; it has its moments, but God, the amount of bombastic overkill you have to sit through to get to those moments! Anyway, I decided this weekend that rocky third-season-so-far or no, I want to keep watching, just in case it gets better (because it's gotten bad before, and gotten better), and so I went to read up on the recaps at television without pity, and holy crow, now I have a whole new person to lose patience with: the recapper. Who is apparently a novelist (I checked) and who apparently can't resist turning each recap into a little novel all its own. Consider this passage from the recap of last Sunday's show:

At the end of the line, where enjambment sings: zero's the number of the Fool, the shape of the storm. It's the beginning and the end, depending on where you start counting. It goes around and around.

Anyone who knows me knows that I have a pretty high tolerance for the pretentious and dense and overwritten; my own little writing forays prove without question that I do. So I'm not trying to dis the recapper's writing style or anything, but dude, I mean to say, what? All I wanted to know was whether Kara really died, among other things. Insightful comments on the states of modern psychology and philosophy aside: I can't tell, reading these recaps, what's actually happening on the series, and what he's whipping up in this week's frothing mini-novel, and maybe I'm being naive here, but I thought that letting people know what was happening on the series was actually the point of these exercises.

Okay, I lied. I am dissing the recapper's style. But it's only because I'm bitter, and, after reading for the past hour, still significantly underinformed. Maybe I'd just better go look for the torrent.

Is it Jason? He recapped Farscape and I swear I wanted to KILL HIM STONE DEAD by about episode 5.

Good lord! Does anyone read those things before they're posted??? Sounds like someone has a serious case of "undiscovered genius" syndrome.

He took ALL the crack. And loves himself way too much, I guess to compensate for the fact that everyone else in the world thinks he's an idiot who can't write for shit.

You are Not Kidding, man. That is a young (I hope young) man who has yet to fall out of love with his own voice.

I thought I replied to this! Where did my reply go?

Anyway: Man, any undiscovered geniuses of that calibre should probably guess that there's a reason why they're still laboring in obscurity. I'm just sayin.

I read your description of the recap, and the first thing I thought too was "I bet it's Jacob." I still haven't caught up on Dr Who, mostly because I was hoping to just read the recaps to find out what happened, but he is so impossibly wordy and ridiculously opinionated that I gave up. So I sympathise completely. =(

lolz! I'm sorry, but this has to be someone joking. No one could type At the end of the line, where enjambment sings: zero's the number of the Fool, the shape of the storm - in a recap, no less - without actively campaigning to be considered a complete wanker.

This...THIS is why I am slavishly devoted to Al Lowe, Potes, and Sara M.

Not to wish joblessness on anybody, man, but what is he still doing there, I wonder, if he's as universally unpopular as he seems to be?

I only wish I could believe it were a joke -- an incredibly elaborate, long-running, kind of bizarre joke. But I think that it is not. D: Yikes.

There is a kind of art to the recap which I am only now beginning to appreciate! :O
