There is something about the Hornblower series that I absolutely loved (maybe another kink: good people trying to make do in strange circumstances); travel literature: Prospero's Cell by Lawrence Durrell, a beautiful account of his life on Corcyra, anything by Paul Theroux, Umberto Eco's The Island of the Day Before I think you'd really love.
