good, bad, ugly -- you get to decide which is which.

An inadvertent big hair day: Today's been rainy, and the weather's trying to psyche out my yard, which has totally decided it's spring in all this mild weather, by turning frigid. Or mmmaybe what it-meaning-the-weather is really concentrating on is my hair, which. There's a Roadrunner cartoon out there where Wile E. Coyote is hanging from a rope, and one by one individual strands of rope break off with a sproing-y sound until Wile E. is literally hanging by a thread, and then he isn't, if you catch my drift, and all you see after he falls out of frame is the sproing-y rope, all curled and unkempt and the latest instrument of Wile E.'s downfall. That's what happened to my hair today; there was sproing-ing all over the place, long tendrils of hair taking the most unexpected shapes.

An embarrassing-yet-pleasing conversation with the VP: "Okay, I know this guy's a qualified carpenter, but did you see that he wrote he'd been to prison for cruelty to animals? We're not going to hire some freak of a cat-killer, and for your future reference, we never will."

An equally embarrassing confession: Do you know that I've never in my days had the courage to go to someone and ask them for a raise? It is because I know that there are worse answers to the question am I really not worth more than this? than a simple no, and I live in fear of hearing them. But faced with the prospect of working every Saturday for the foreseeable future just to pay my bills, I girded my proverbial loins and spoke up this week. Do you know, it turns out that the answer to the question am I really not worth more than this? is now that you mention it, I guess you are worth more, at that. In other words, I asked for a raise and got it. Can you believe that?

Go on with your bad self, you raise-gettin' thing you!

This great news for you, and encouraging for me as I slog through this corporate reorganization.

I hope it's over for you soon, and that you end up exactly where you want to be. :D

GO YOU! That's seriously great news. :-)

Ah, the perfect icon! I am full of happy interjections this week. :D

You have The Power!!! Erm. Sorry for the He-Man reference.

Ahahaha, I'm glad you said; my He-Man-watching days are so far behind me that I probably wouldn't have gotten the reference otherwise!

We can thank my sister for that one. She resurrected some ancient videotapes with the orignal animated series on them and promptly gave them to my son, who, ofcoursedeargodgivemepatience, treasures them.

Good for you for getting a raise! I used to be nervous about discussing pay but a few years ago I started forcing myself to be more demanding. I too was amazed when it worked.

[identity profile] tofty.livejournal.com 2007-01-17 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, I was telling coco the other day that I'm still fighting this guilty/furtive feeling, as though I've somehow defrauded them of that extra money. Tell me that goes away!

Congrats on the raise.

That's something I like about the army - I get a raise every year or so, whether I actually really deserve it or no.

Kinda scary though - some OTHER people get promoted who deserve it even less than I.

That's the great thing/scary thing about government work in general, really. Every now and then I envy my friends who work in state-run universtities, for their sliding pay scales and their auto-raises. But really, I like it fine where I am -- working in the private sector definitely has its own advantages!

This asking-for-a-raise business is huge for you! I am so proud! :D Of course, of course you are worth about a trillion times more than you make. But when one is as fabulous as you, it is simply unfair to ask for a salary commensurate with your quality. Our national budget could never support it.

Congratulations x 4,000,000. I love you.

It is huge, isn't it? But not so huge as your triptogenaric birthday which I missed I am still so very sorry honestly I feel terrible.

I love you too -- and think you are as wonderful as people come, at thirty, and I will think you at least as wonderful when you are a hundred.

and I will think you at least as wonderful when you are a hundred.

I'll at least have made a good start by then. :-*

What! It's no big deal, I know you love me and the call is a mere formality. I have the most retarded track record for calls and presents. :/ Believe me, nobody knows the "oops!" thing better than I do.

RAISE! RAISE!! RAISE!!!

Go you. I'm proud of you!

[identity profile] tofty.livejournal.com 2007-01-17 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
A secret: I am proud of me too! I truly wasn't sure I had it in me. Now I know I do, and I think that's Something Big. :)
