My day started bright and early, when I woke up and started pulling out clothes for my interview this afternoon, and discovered that since I last wore them two years ago I have grown out of them. This includes the shoes, which was kind of shocking as well as upsetting, since now I have at least three pairs of shoes I can no longer wear, and they were such pretty shoes, pumps and heeled loafers. Not, of course, that I've worn them since my last interviews -- Macon, it is not a business-formal town -- but still. And that's not even to address the Fat Situation (which will be addressed, oh yes, but not until next week because I am leaving for an American Odyssey ending, as all good American Odysseys do, deep in the heart of Texas).

So it started out badly and it got a little worse from there, with my first interview of the day. It was a phone interview, and it is a bit of an understatement to say that we got off the phone, this chick Nicky and I, with a less-than-enthusiastic feeling for each other. She seemed to feel that the only correct answer to the question "If you’re offered a phone service job with us and an IT job with another company at the same time, which would you choose?” is “Oh, I would choose you in a heartbeat!” and not my answer of, "Well, it would sort of depend on the circumstances, the jobs themselves, the companies and the rapport I share with each." The rapport was not between Nicky and me, so much. She's told me she'll call back by tomorrow morning to let me know, but I'm not holding my breath.

But my day got exponentially better after that! After my interview, I went shopping for interview clothes, and hit a lucky bonanza end-of-summer sale which netted me an interview outfit, a black-and-white linen skirt with a black crossover top, for less than twenty-five dollars, and then out to lunch with two friends, who consoled me and fed me a margarita and enchiladas -- so decadent, on a Tuesday lunchtime! -- and then I went home to change, found a pair of shoes which used to be a little big for me, but which now fit me perfectly, and hopped off for my second interview.

I had low expectations for this one, to be honest. It's a placement agency, and they told me over the phone that they've had a slow summer, but I went in anyway, took their typing, writing, and technical tests, and I thought I did just okay on them, but it turns out that I did kind of spectacularly well, and the placement manager assured me that she'll have no trouble finding me something really pretty good, probably within the month. In fact, she was going to make one call today to a company who's looking for someone to write, design and publish their company newsletter, and find out if they could live with my somewhat out-of-date Mac experience. But there are others, oh yes, and we did have a rapport, Tori and I -- she even loves my newly-redesigned resume! We talked about our fathers, for pete's sake! -- and even if this newsletter-needing, Mac-loving company doesn't pan out, and even if it turns out that Tori is just feeding me a standard line (if she is, MY GOD is she good at her job), I feel better today about my job situation than I have in two months. Longer than that. Much longer.

And after that, dressed in my pretty wraparound work clothes, I went to see Idlewild and loved every messy, big-hearted, extravagantly beautiful minute of it. And for a day that started out so crappily, I'm really feeling mighty fine right now.

Yay for Tori! Hope you get something wonderful out of it. :-)

I once went to an interview in two totally different shoes, one black and one blue, and one heel higher than the other. I didn't notice before I left the house because I always used to wear my sneakers to drive in and changed into my good shoes whenever I got where I was going. I don't think anyone noticed, but I was mortified just the same.

What a dumb question to ask in the first place. Phooey on Nicky. But yay for Tori! You're right; even if it doesn't result in the high-paying, benefits-rich job you so richly deserve, that lift in spirits is quite a thing all by itself.

I love the sound of the Tuesday shopping-spree-and-lunch out! I'm glad you had a great time, and it's nice to hear a thumbs up for Idlewild; the local paper didn't think much of it, but I value your opinion more than the Mercury's.

I'm very glad for you! I have a good feeling that Tori isn't just feeding you a line. The people who are very good with the tests are the ones they can get out the door and be reasonably confident you'll make a good impression for them. Fingers are crossed. *hugs*
