Do read the T. Harry Williams biography. It's an amazing and complicated book about an amazing and complicated man, one of the most comprehensive and incisive biographies ever written. All the King's Men is also really good; it's fiction, but it's extremely thinly disguised fiction.

I am not a 100%-balls-to-the-wall fan of Huey Long. But I agree that we need someone who can sustain the courage of his convictions long enough to affect a social reform. Because I agree with something [livejournal.com profile] violetisblue said recently, and that I'm seeing said more and more often: We can't go on like this, or we will cannibalize our own country. Or suffocate it. Or, you know, something to that effect.
