Quick-and-dirty update
Apr. 21st, 2006 09:05 amI would've posted this last night, but my connection was down. And it will be choppy and abrupt, but I just wanted to update while I had the chance. We connectionless pirates must take our opportunities where we find them!
More later, I think.
- The dog! We have had a couple of moments which were traumatic for the both of us, but for the most part we are adjusting well. I've decided on a name, finally. Or really, he's decided on the name; every time I mentioned it in his presence he perked up, and now he comes to me whenever I say it, so I guess that's that, right? He's decided that his name is Leory, pronounced lee-ORE-ee, and we've been practicing all day, responding to it, getting used to the sound of it. A few more days, and we might even have forgotten the indignity of the name Freeway.
- Do you know that almost precisely two years ago I wrote complaining of having to pay $18.00 for a tank of gas? It seems laughable now, considering that this past week I paid $31.00 to fill that same tank. And only the prospect of paying more to look forward to. I said it then, and I'll say it now: thanks a pantsload, GWB.
- I love that google saw fit to celebrate Joan Miro's birthday! Several times yesterday, I visited to look at their trademark image, just because it made me smile, and I wish they'd left it up for a little bit longer. (eta: although apparently some didn't like it quite so much.)
- I would like to make it known that I am being harrassed at work! Three coworkers laughed at me all afternoon long yesterday because of the way I say "fucking." I pronounce the g and everything! The way they went on about it--they even made me repeat it for other coworkers--you'd think Mary Poppins had belched in front of them. To which I say, there is nothing funny about the way I talk, damn it. No, really.
- I reread some of the stuff on my old journal--not the fics, just the entries--and was surprised to find that even though I spent most of that last year thinking that I was writing the most drivellous and pointless entries on the whole of livejournal--when I could write at all, that is, when I wasn't completely paralyzed by anxiety--the entries aren't actually all that repugnant, after all. This was a bit of a nice surprise for me, both that I could read the journal objectively, and that it could give me some pleasure to read and remember. It's amazing how different things look from outside a depression.
- To that end I've decided to crosspost links to my Grimmauld Place project both there and here. Sorry for those of you who're seeing it twice. But I hope that the few of you who're interested in looking it over who haven't already seen it have fun with it. One warning: it's very image-heavy, and people with slow connections will have a time loading it. So many, many thanks to
21stcenturysei! And
aubrem! And
dahlia_777! And
laurelwood! For being betas! Even though some of them did not want to be called that!
More later, I think.

Date: 2006-04-21 02:13 pm (UTC)You will note that in the end, I decided to leave the dates in. This is not because I changed my mind about their being better left out, but because I am shamefully lazy. :( Otherwise, I did change the Great Hall description, and I like the new one much better. Your scientific recommendations were just what I needed.

Date: 2006-04-21 02:50 pm (UTC)Hey, have you heard from L. lately? I haven't talked to her in ages, and I want to call her this weekend, but I was just wondering if you'd heard any news.

Date: 2006-04-21 02:50 pm (UTC)But i hate to tell you ... I'm probably going to secretly think of your puppy as 'Bad Bad Leory Brown' from now on. I have a secret, horrible love for that song.

Date: 2006-04-21 02:54 pm (UTC)Weirdly, I spent a little while yesterday talking about how much I loved "You Don't Mess Around with Jim" when I was a little girl. I have a secret fondness for Jim Croce.

Date: 2006-04-21 03:01 pm (UTC)I don't know much about Jim Croce apart from having read an interesting article about him that basically spelt out that he was a folksinger who had this anomaly hit. Is this right? And I haven't heard that song, I don't think. Who sings it?

Date: 2006-04-21 03:23 pm (UTC)Here are the lyrics to "You Don't Mess Around with Jim," because I know you're dying to know them and I am happy to oblige:
Uptown's got its hustlers
The Bowry's got its bums
Forty-second street's got Big Jim Walker
He's a pool-shootin' son of a gun
Yeah, he's big and dumb as a man can come
But he's stronger than a country hoss
And when the bad folks all get together at night
You know they all call Big Jim "boss"
Just because
And they say
You don't tug on Superman's cape
You don't spit into the wind
You don't pull the mask of the old Lone Ranger
You don't mess around with Jim
Ah-doo-doo, doo-da
Da-dee dee and dee-dee-dee
Well, out of South Alabama come a country boy
He said, I'm lookin' for a man named Jim
I am a pool-shootin' boy, my name is Willie McCoy
But back home they call me Slim
Hey, I'm lookin' for the king of forty-second street
He's drivin' a drop-top Cadillac
And last week he took all my money
And it may sound funny
But I come to get my money back
And everybody say, Jack -- don't you know that
You don't tug on Superman's cape
You don't spit into the wind
You don't pull the mask of the old Lone Ranger
And you don't mess around with Jim
Ah-doo-doo, doo-da
Da-dee dee and dee-dee-dee
Well a hush fell over the pool room
When Jimmy come boppin' in off the street
And when the cuttin' was done
the only part that wasn't bloody
Was the soles of the big man's feet
He was cut in 'bout a hundred places
And he was shot in a couple more
And you better believe
They sung a different kind of story
When Big Jim hit the floor
And now they say
You don't tug on Superman's cape
You don't spit into the wind
You don't pull the mask of the old Lone Ranger
And you don't mess around with Slim
It is an insanely catchy song, totally aside from the ass-kicking chorus, so you see why I loved it as a four-year-old.
:::
"Leroy Brown" might just as well have been Fred's theme song. Pray God, in all seriousness, that I never have another dog who's quite such a badass. :(

Date: 2006-04-22 11:22 am (UTC)And the Grimmauld Place floorplan is amazing. I went and reread bits of OotP last night, after looking at your plan, and just seeing how much you'd inserted and fleshed out in little ways. Lovely. =)
