The wonderful thing about short-season cable series is that they're free of dead weight; because the season only runs about a dozen episodes, give or take, there's no room for filler. In the best shows, every scene is there for a reason, and every detail tells a story.

The terrible thing about short-season cable series, of course, is that they literally last just a season, run for three months, and then it's an agonizing nine-month wait for the next. And when you're talking about a show-changing season finale, such as Mad Men manages at the end of every season, the wait's just about unbearable. And when it's one of the single most satisfying hours of television you've ever had the pleasure to experience, the way the season three finale was for me, well. I think you understand where I'm going with this, but I'll say it anyway. It's been a long 2010, Matthew Weiner.

And the wait's just about over now -- the season four premiere's tomorrow night -- made much more bearable, this summer, by an excellent series of posts by Tom & Lorenzo analyzing the show through its women and their personal styles. A couple of posts a week since May, ramped up to a post every day this week, each post is thoughtful and comprehensive and enhances the show experience, and it's a fantastic way to refresh, as well as a good reminder of how minutely detailed Mad Men really is.

One last post for Betty, now, and I'll be ready to watch. I can't wait.
