(14) Kurt and Burt Hummel

Don't get me wrong, I love most things about Glee, and I don't even know about 80% of the songs they've sung so far. It's beautifully musical-ish and vividly colored and hilarious to boot, and I knew I was going to love it from the Groundhog Day reference in the pilot.

Kurt and his Dad, though, they just break my heart into a million pieces on the floor. For those of you unversed in the ways of Glee: Kurt is a flamboyantly gay soprano who wears enough hairspray that he doesn't even get helmet head when he wears a football helmet; his father's a redneck mechanic who sneaks home from work early so he can watch Deadliest Catch. And they love each other. I know! but it's true, and in fact, the two have the most emotionally honest and committed relationship on the show. (Of course, given the nature of the show's interpersonal dynamics, that isn't actually giving them the credit they deserve, but even so.) A terrified Kurt comes out to his father, and Burt tells him he loves him and thanks him for telling him. Kurt, who has an iPod devoted to nothing but Wicked, deliberately throws a chance at a singing a solo on "Defying Gravity" out the window when he sees how hurt his dad looks when people call him a fag.

And I would say that every teenager with a scary secret to confess should have a parent like Kurt Hummel there for them, and that every parent should have a child with such careful concern for their feelings, but you know what? We should all have people like that in our lives. Seriously.
