How high is the water, Mama?
Jul. 1st, 2009 10:34 pmI remember, a long time ago, talking to someone or reading something -- like any reader, sometimes I get these two things all mixed up in my head -- about Flood Books, and I didn't know what they were, but it turns out that I'd always carried them without knowing that they actually had a name and a designation. Flood Books are the books that you are never without, see? They're tucked into your pocket, your bag, your PDA, and whenever you're unexpectedly stuck somewhere, a doctor's office, or a traffic jam, or, you know, a flash flood (because sometimes they do happen, especially in South Louisiana), they're waiting for you. You're never bored, never without something to occupy you; you never have to give yourself time to dangerously overthink your life, when you have a Flood Book.
Flood Books are a necessity in life: I rarely am so unequivocal about a thing as I am about this. And I'd like to say that I'm not really sure when I got out of the habit of carrying one, but it's not true that I don't know. It was about 2001, when I was introduced to fanfiction, which of course is not without its delights, but the thing is that ever since a certain incident when I was trapped in an elevator with multiple priests, a bishop, and my then-boss for seventeen floors, flushed and in full-on sensory overload from reading the hottest 2500 words of straight, sweet porn I'd ever at that point had the privilege to read/experience, I've been a little wary of reading fanfiction as a part of my daily life. And so sometimes I find myself without a book, and am therefore forced to read the crappy magazines in the waiting room or clean out my glove compartment or some such thing, killing time when I could be properly engaged. It's not right.
So I am going to make a vow here: from now on, I swear I will always have a book in my possession. If you ever meet me, you may demand to see it, and if I cannot produce it, demand a forfeit of your choice from me. Be thinking on that, but I warn you that I am going to be hard to catch out on this one. I just miss having a flood book, and when you've been missing a thing, it's incredibly easy to stick closely to it once you have it again.
