between the idea and the reality
Apr. 18th, 2009 05:39 pmI mentioned, right, that I will be in New York in June, but what I did not mention is that picking theatrical entertainment is up to me. This is a lot of pressure for a girl who not only has not seen a lot of Broadway plays in her life, but also (1) has read more plays than she has actually seen ever, and (2) is not all that certain to find something that can satisfy three people whose tastes are pretty divergent. I mean, I'll see just about anything with the best of good will, but my parents' tastes are more far conventional than mine, and I'm a little worried about getting them into something we'll all regret later.
So! If you had been asked to choose a comedy and a musical, of all the Broadway plays in New York, for two people whose tastes are pretty parochial, what would you choose? I've narrowed it down to the stuff that sounds most interesting to me that I think my parents might also get into, but I will totally accept write-in votes if you've got something in mind that's not on my list.
Comedies:
August: Osage County
Exit the King
The 39 Steps
Musicals:
In the Heights
South Pacific
Guys and Dolls
What do you think?
