I've missed the last few episodes of Battlestar Galactica. I have to admit that this mid-season is trying my patience; it has its moments, but God, the amount of bombastic overkill you have to sit through to get to those moments! Anyway, I decided this weekend that rocky third-season-so-far or no, I want to keep watching, just in case it gets better (because it's gotten bad before, and gotten better), and so I went to read up on the recaps at television without pity, and holy crow, now I have a whole new person to lose patience with: the recapper. Who is apparently a novelist (I checked) and who apparently can't resist turning each recap into a little novel all its own. Consider this passage from the recap of last Sunday's show:
Anyone who knows me knows that I have a pretty high tolerance for the pretentious and dense and overwritten; my own little writing forays prove without question that I do. So I'm not trying to dis the recapper's writing style or anything, but dude, I mean to say, what? All I wanted to know was whether ( serious spoiler ), among other things. Insightful comments on the states of modern psychology and philosophy aside: I can't tell, reading these recaps, what's actually happening on the series, and what he's whipping up in this week's frothing mini-novel, and maybe I'm being naive here, but I thought that letting people know what was happening on the series was actually the point of these exercises.
Okay, I lied. I am dissing the recapper's style. But it's only because I'm bitter, and, after reading for the past hour, still significantly underinformed. Maybe I'd just better go look for the torrent.
At the end of the line, where enjambment sings: zero's the number of the Fool, the shape of the storm. It's the beginning and the end, depending on where you start counting. It goes around and around.
