destroyed by styling mousse
Sep. 9th, 2010 01:05 pmI got my hair cut today, and I got it cut short.
It's become my habit, in the past few years, to get it cut ear-length or chin-length and let it grow gradually to shoulder-length, with the occasional traditional over-the-sink trimming of the bangs to keep things reasonably under control, but this time, I hearkened back to a practice I abandoned with my ex-city: sitting down sick of my hair and announcing to the hairdresser: "Pixie. Short. Over the ears, tapered to the nape. I want it all off."
It's funny. Short-haired hairdressers fulfill my request gleefully, they grab up the scissors with one hand and all my hair with the other and hack with a will, they tell me how cute it's going to look and how much I'm going to adore it, they are practically shiny-eyed at the chance to sell the pixie look to (as far as they know) a new recruit. And this is so cool, I love this, I love that they're so willing, I love that they're so fearless.
The long-haired hairdressers are an altogether different story. They ask me if I'm sure. They offer to cut it in stages lest I change my mind, even after I assure them that I've had short hair before. Some have insisted that it be done this way; no doubt they've had clients like my soon-to-be-erstwhile sister-in-law, who requested a Katie Holmes bob, got it, looked adorable in it, and still burst into tears when she saw her reflection in the mirror.
This hairdresser, she was long-haired. And she was skeptical, though she did cut it all at once, once I'd talked her down from the ledge. It's a little too long in the back and I had her cut a little more, a little too short on the sides but there's nothing but time can cure that, and I'm happy, and she's maybe not happy, but at least it's over for her and I didn't actually start to cry in her chair and so we'll chalk it up as a win for her, too.
On the whole, though, I keep thinking that it's so much trouble, having to reassure your hairdresser that you know what you're doing, that it's all gonna be okay. I'm wondering, you ladies with the short hair: have you ever tried to cut it yourself? And how hard is it?
me, pixilated on more than one front (and YES THAT IS A HALO):
