Some of you may remember -- although it's more likely that you totally do not, and so I am reminding you -- that one of my fannish enthusiasms is imagining spaces for characters I love. Mostly spaces in Harry Potter, as it happens, since for a very long time that was my most beloved fandom. There was the classic interactive Grimmauld Place plan, now sadly gone from the internets and not going back up in its current form (I let my domain lapse, and my intent to just use google sites from now on means that the javascript isn't going to work). There was the Edward Gorey Spinner's End diorama, which how could it have fallen from public memory so quickly, and there was a sketchy Harry-and-Ginny house as well, and I know that this is hardly stuff that other people get excited about, but man, I loved working those projects up about ten times more than I have ever loved actually writing, and don't get me wrong, I love writing. Architecture, see, it's my first and sweetest love, the kind you sometimes forget, but whenever you think about it you are a little weak-kneed, a little breathless, suddenly stripped of all artifice and cynicism.

It's weird, I know. Let's ignore the weirdness of it, shall we, and for the moment just focus on how happy messing around with house plans makes me.

Because it does, and as I read through my recently-acquired, badly-spelled but lovely copy of TV Sets (thinking you know, this is great but I can do it so much better, which believe me, this is not a thought I have often), it occurred to me that if one really thinks a thing like that, one ought to do something about it. I think I ought to do something about it.

So I am going to do it. Starting now, I'm committing to more projects, and to celebrate, I will be reposting (and reworking) the old plans, but also, I want some new stuff as well, and with that in mind, I'm remembering that in a long-ago drabble meme which I reprehensibly never completed, or even started, [personal profile] xanthophyllippa requested a plan instead of a drabble, and I was dazzled by the idea, and I am adding that idea to my list of things to do. But also, and here is my point, I want to open that meme back up, to architecture only. Have a (fictional) space you want me to imagine for you? I will imagine it to the best of my ability, and draw it up and annotate it and make it as spiffing as I know how.

The rules for request, if you have one, are these:

  1. The space should be mentioned in a fictional work, a book or a TV show or a film (such as the Talboys plan from Busman's Honeymoon [personal profile] amelia_eve and I discussed earlier today), or else it should house fictional characters (one thing certainly on my current shortlist is a little post-apocalyptic house for Sam and Dean Winchester).

  2. There are no limits as to fandom, although obviously in a case where I do not know the fandom I'm going to have to familiarize myself with it, and there will be a lag time ranging from pretty short to -- in the case of, say, a long-running TV series or an excessively long novel -- quite long, but I promise to keep the list and do my best to make good on fulfilling every request.

  3. You can make the request as vague or as specific as you'd like.

  4. I can't think of a fourth thing, so I guess that's it.

So request away! Please! You will make me so happy if you do. Have I mentioned that this fantasy architecture fills me with joy?

it's my first and sweetest love, the kind you sometimes forget, but whenever you think about it you are a little weak-kneed, a little breathless, suddenly stripped of all artifice and cynicism.

I had to read this out loud to the spouse, it charmed me so. It charmed him, too.

And a request! A crazy request! As you no doubt recall, at the end of "In Which Eeyore Finds the Wolery and Owl Moves Into It," Owl has laid claim to Piglet's house, and Christopher Robin has said to Piglet, "Well, what would you do if your house were blown down by a storm?" and Pooh has immediately answered for him: "He'd come and live with me."

So. Piglet and Pooh's house! Or one room therein!

Oh, what an amazing offer!

Although it's been illustrated to death and back again, not to mention set-designed and filmed to the nth degree, I think I want Tolkien. Either Rivendell (the real Rivendell, not the movie one - dark & medieval, I think) or pretty much any space in the Shire. A public space would be nice - how houses stand in relation to each other, or something (what town is the big confrontation in at the end? Is it Bywater? Yes, I think so, the Battle of Bywater, right?)

Anyway, yes, you can't have too much of that. I mean I can't.

Wow, thanks! I look forward to seeing what evolves, and I admire your ability to commit to long-term projects ... :D
