dead men walking

So today we drove to Atlanta to see the Tutankhamun exhibit, which was very well put together, not to mention fascinating, and which I wish I weren't completely broke because some of the gift shop stuff was miraculously wonderful -- I mean, a pen shaped like Tut's mummy, and when I say "mummy" I don't mean all linen-wrapped and sarcophagused, I mean like blackened and shriveled and lipless, WHOA I MUST HAVE DIED AND GONE TO HEAVEN ASCENDED TO AWAIT THE JUDGMENT OF OSIRIS -- but that's not what I want to talk about. What I want to talk about is this: somehow at lunch talk turned to Last Meals, as in, if you were on death row and had a last meal coming to you, what would it be? Three out of four of us could answer that question really easily, as easily as if we sat around every day preparing for the moment when we were forced to order our very last, favoritest meal, which was a little surprising.

But anyway. How easily can you answer the question? And what would your last meal be?

My mother's tuna casserole, my grandmother's banana bread, my best friend's mother's pasta salad and my other grandmother's fruit salad for dessert. And milk.

I'd have a terrible time deciding. Filet mignon with blue cheese, maybe. Or beef stroganoff. Or this incredible ricotta gnocchi with meat sauce that a restaurant near here makes. Definitely macaroni and cheese on the side--the cheesier, the better. And bread pudding for dessert... and something chocolaty, too. Lava cake, I think. And a profiterole.

I'd need a buffet.

Oh, and yay for the Tut exhibit--I think that must be the one that was in Chicago a couple years ago. It was terrific. And, yeah, I was tempted to go nuts in the gift shop.

Oh, man, now I crave a blackened, lipless mummy pen.

As for last meals, oy. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to be a total glutton for one's last meal, would it? Might as well load up that prison tray and loosen the waistband of those orange pants!

Matzo ball soup
Chinese chicken salad from Happi House
Some really kickass fried chicken
Hot sourdough bread slathered with butter
Lemon cheesecake pie, with a side of chocolate eclair and a piece of penuche fudge

Wouldn't it be fun to have a "last meal" potluck?

oh. I can't decide.
Steak? Chicken Tikka Marsala? Some fabulous chips and salsa? Sushi?
