I stealed this meme from [livejournal.com profile] woodyinvincible, who shares my past epic love for Fight Club and to whom I meant to comment about that, but then it was too late and I felt embarrassed even though you all say it's fine to make belated comments on posts but I can't help it okay.

1. What movie have you seen the most time in the theater? How many times?
I saw Fight Club so many times – at least seven or eight, and probably more – that (1) I stopped calling my most reliable movie pal (he who convinced me to see LA Confidential almost as many times, but he is much more shameless than I am) to tag along, and (2) took to seeing it at two different theatres to avoid the knowing looks of the cashiers. Who probably thought I was obsessed with Brad Pitt or something.

2. What was the last movie you walked out of in the theater?
I don't think I've ever walked out. I've wanted to, though, oh yes. Message in a Bottle sets the record for me, I think; I wanted to walk out about five minutes into that one, and it just got worse from there. You've Got Mail, though, that one was almost as bad.

3. What is the first movie you remember seeing in a theater?
The first movie I remember seeing and following all the way through was I think Disney's The Jungle Book with my cousin K when I was six. I think it must've been a re-release or a summer special or something, because it originally came out before I was born, and yet I distinctly remember trying to convince K to take us to see Jaws instead. She didn't, and I guess I can understand why and forgive her for it, but I can't help but feel that my life would be very different if I'd seen Jaws that day.

4. What is your favorite movie soundtrack?
I don't have too many soundtracks. For pop music, I still like Stealing Beauty quite a lot, but SLC Punk is always fun. For orchestral music, I really love the soundtracks for The Lord of the Rings. The theme for the Rohirrim still breaks me out in goosebumps. Favorite composers in general are Jon Brion and Mark Mothersbaugh.

5. Have you ever dressed up as a movie character for Halloween? If so, who?
You know, I don't think I have, unless you count Casper the Friendly Ghost, which was only I think a television show when I wore the costume.

6. What was the first R-rated movie you ever saw? Were you allowed or did you sneak?
Ahahahaha, wow, my intro was a good one. Body Heat, at age 12 or so? My parents rented it without actually knowing that Kathleen Turner spent the majority of the movie literally fucking William Hurt stupid, and I think they were so deeply in shock over it that they just let us keep watching. The first R-Rated film I saw in a theatre was Risky Business, which my friend P's forward-thinking mother took us to. No sneak-ins for me, she said virtuously.

7. Star Wars (orig. trilogy) or Lord of the Rings?
Lord of the Rings. But I still kind of love the original Star Wars trilogy.

8. Pacino or DeNiro?
DeNiro, although Pacino is fine as long as directors aren't giving him Philosophical Monologues to spout.

9. Titanic...did it suck or was it great?
The first half, the chick-flick half, kind of sucked. The second half, the disaster-movie half, was pretty awesome.

10. What's your take on Cassavetes?
I don't know enough to form an opinion. Wasn't there a Cassavetes in Rosemary's Baby? Is he who we're talking about?

11. Favorite John Hughes character?
I've always had soft spots, very similar soft spots, for Cameron Frye and Duckie Dale.

12. What movie gives you a boner (or makes you tingle)?
Secretary is the first one that comes to mind, although of course there're lots more. Sex, Lies, and Videotape, for example.

13. What movie always makes you cry like the big puss you are?
I cry pretty easily at movies, but I hope to God no movie ever makes me cry as hard as I did (fifteen minutes in the bathroom sobbing uncontrollably) during I Am Legend. Which I will never watch again.

14. What's the furthest you've ever gotten in a movie theater? (i.e, second base...)
Oh, how embarrassing. No base at all. I don't think I've ever even kissed in a movie theater. I had a friend in college who actually hit home runs with her boyfriend in theaters (also laundromats, in case you're interested), which I always thought was very impressive.

15. Speaking of sports metaphors, what's your favorite sports movie?
Bull Durham. Which is also my favorite romantic comedy. Who'd've thought one movie could be both things at once for me?

16. (a) Favorite... teen movie?
Movies I saw as an actual teenager: The Breakfast Club and River's Edge. Movies I like best as an adult: I really kind of adore Dick (hey, it's about teenagers, right?), ooooh and Juno. Also, Whatever and Election and Dazed and Confused were great too, and okay, I better quit while I'm ahead.

(b)...Quentin Tarantino movie?
Kill Bill. I don't think it's his best, exactly, but I love it the most.

(c)...Bill Murray movie?
Groundhog Day, tied with Rushmore, with Lost in Translation a close second/third. I love The Royal Tenenbaums more than all of those, but Bill Murray is such a minor character in it that it almost doesn't count. And recently, I've been kind of digging Ghostbusters again; I hadn't seen it in years before I downloaded it a few weeks ago.

(d)...romantic comedy?
Bull Durham. Again. I remember Roxanne very fondly as well, though it's been a long time, but that's at least partly because I've always loved Cyrano and its offshoots (The Truth about Cats and Dogs is another one). It's a deep-seated plain-Jane-friend syndrome, I think. Nice to know that somewhere, even if it's only in fiction, the mousy, clever one is the one who's loved the most.

(e)...gangster movie?
This is a tough one because gangster movies are such a pleasure of mine. Top five, in no particular order: The Departed, The Untouchables, Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, and Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. And Goodfellas.

(f)...horror movie?
Does Shaun of the Dead count? I think it should, but if not, I'll go with The Exorcist, although I loved The Serpent and the Rainbow much more than it probably deserved.

(g)...made for TV movie?
Hmmm, I don't watch enough TV to have a wide field to choose from. Razor, maybe? Or, no, probably Pride and Prejudice.

(h)...director?
The Coen brothers are pretty awesome. I'm gonna go with C's answer here. Although I do still love Wes Anderson and P.T. Anderson with my whole heart.

(i)...drug movie?
Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Excellent but totally nauseating.

17. What movie have you seen already but will never, ever, ever watch again?
In a good way or a bad way? There are lots of movies that I loved but which I found too disturbing or upsetting to watch again: the aforementioned I Am Legend, Dead Ringers, and Brokeback Mountain are just a few of them.

18. What movie are you embarrassed to really like?
My tastes are pretty open when it comes to movies. I can't think of any movies I like which would make me blush to claim them. Oh, wait. Charlie's Angels.

19. What movie should be remade asap?
Spiderman 3, you were a grave disappointment to me. Also, I didn't know it was possible for me to dislike films based on Jane Austen novels until I saw Mansfield Park (which is admittedly my least favorite Austen novel anyway, but OH MY GOD). I call a do-over on that one too.

20. What the F happened to (insert answer)? He used to be so damn funny!
What's Ewan McGregor up to these days? He's not working enough for my taste.

21. For the love of everything that's sacred, please someone stop (insert answer) from making another movie!
Tom Cruise. 2006 notwithstanding, I've never understood why people loved him so goddamned much. Get him off my screen, okay?

22. What movie do all your friends love but you think is whatevs?
Y Tu Mama Tambien. Boys kissing, I know, but even so.

23. What movie do you love but all your friends think is whatevs?
I think I am the only person in America who'll admit to having liked Vanilla Sky. Please do not hate me for it.

24. If you could hump/date/marry any movie character, who would it be?
An embarrassing number, really. Christian Bale's Batman is the latest in a long string. All-time faves tend to be from period lit films, though: The Vicomte de Valmont, Frederick Wentworth, and Paul Bettany's Stephen Maturin top the list. I am so predictable.

25. Best...movie....ever?
Impossible question. I'm going to limit my answer to a category inexplicably not covered in this meme and tell you what my favorite animated films are: Spirited Away, Persepolis, and The Triplets of Belleville. (I think it's no accident that none of them are American films; that said, I love Pixar, and also South Park.)

26. Book you wish would be made into a movie, and who would direct it?
Well, I would want this movie to be a cable series, really, because it's so enormous that a movie couldn't possibly cover it, but let's go with A Song of Ice and Fire. Which actually I've sort of heard HBO is interested, so fingers crossed. [ETA: Forgot to say that I'd want Peter Jackson to direct. Even if it failed, it'd be an interesting failure, don't you think?]
