In addition to the aforementioned difficulties getting online, I've been having a few issues lately with my computer which were looking distressingly motherboardish. It froze, frequently and without warning, especially if it were being moved, or if I were typing a great deal. Sometimes it would unfreeze again after a few heart-stopping seconds, and sometimes it wouldn't, and I'd have to reboot. I'm sure you can imagine that this wasn't the ideal computing scenario, and I've been dreading the day when I would have to fork over more cash for a replacement.

So last night, I was sitting around playing a game of solitaire, and it froze up on me for about the third time in one night, and I said fuck this, man, jumped up to get my teeny-screwdriver set, and started taking the whole thing apart. I figured it couldn't possibly be any worse even if it never started again; and besides, I had this little hope in the back of my mind. Maybe you have it too? That when you start a repair it will somehow miraculously manage to be much easier than you're thinking it will be? I always do, anyway, even though it almost never actually does turn out to be easier than I'd planned.

Except that when I had the whole thing apart, there was this inexplicable U-shaped rod rattling around loose in there, and when I shook it out and put my laptop back together, everything was working again, including my wireless connection. And so I'm up and running, with no effort expended beyond unscrewing the 240 or so tiny screws on the underside of the laptop. And I'm holding on to the little rod just in case everything goes to hell again, but so far, everything is going swimmingly. *knocks on desktop*

I mean to say. :O

Hey, nothing to be impressed about! Anyone can wield a screwdriver! Even a teeny one!

Haha, when I thought to come up here and check my wireless connection tonight, Howl's Moving Castle was playing in my bedroom, and I never went back to turn it off, oops. I can hear it from in the study. Although my player just moved on to Serenity, for the record, and so now I can hear distant Space Opera.

All hail, Mighty Vanquisher of the Inexplicable U-Shaped Rod! (There's a cryptic-as-all-get-out Halloween costume in this somewhere; I'm sure of it.)

This would never be a project I'd attack with any hope whatsoever that it'll be easier than I think it should be, so I'm doubly awed by your prowess here. (And also thrilled your wireless connection is back!)

I srsly can't imagine a halloween costume more cryptic than a computer-repair superhero! I'm awfully tempted, even given the fact that I have no occasion to dress for Halloween this year (I'll be languishing at my parents' house while they're on vacation, and their house doesn't even really get trick-or-treaters).

I'm now late getting dressed for work because I couldn't stand the idea of not turning the computer on just to make sure it wasn't all a beautiful dream; when the connection was miraculously still there, of course I had to log on to celebrate! Oh well, it's definitely worth the two-minute shower I'm now in for. *beams*

I'm thrilled to be back!

I totally didn't, though! I just couldn't stand it another minute, is all. I've been kicking myself for not jut taking the whole damn thing apart the day I got it.

I need to call you, don't I! You left me in midsentence last week -- it's not often I get stuck with that sort of suspense! -- and anyway, I'm also dying to hear about The Mountain Goats.

I was interested in reading a story (Circle Uncoiled, http://tofty.livejournal.com/57646.html) linked over here via this list:

http://eriador117.livejournal.com/107902.html

I was wondering when you had time, if you wouldn't mind friending me so I could read it. I'm well past 18 (or if you have it archived somewhere, that would be fine too).

Thanks so much.

Hi! That entry's been made private on this journal, but I do have it available publicly on my fanfic journal. Hope you enjoy! :)

Oh my God, you totally have to come and take apart my laptop. It has four lovely vertical stripes across the monitor now, two cyan, one pink and one green. I'm taking bets on what colours will be next.
