The nameless slave will be king of an unknown country.

Sometimes it's an unrewarding thing to be Good at Computers. Take today, for instance, which saw the triumphant end to long-ongoing puzzle. I put about twenty hours of work altogether into making a single application work on a single computer without reformatting the hard disk, because my coworker had to have that application and because I only reformat hard disks as an absolute last resort (and there was no guarantee that a reformat would actually fix the problem); I researched and configured and reconfigured and uninstalled and reinstalled and messed around with the registry and lo! I finally got it fixed just in time for lunch, after about three months of sporadic yet highly frustrating labor. I watched her computer send a test fax (it's a fax-over-pc application), ran downstairs to intercept it, and practically wept with joy when I watched our fax machine print it out. I felt as though a parade should be held in my honor. I felt that I should be allowed to rule the world for a day.

But here's what happened instead: everyone just went about their business as if I had totally not just performed a miracle, can you believe it? The woman whose computer it was thanked me nicely, my coworkers said that it would be fine for me to have that painful ordeal behind me, and everyone went back to work, and everyone knew that I'd made it happen, but everyone figured that ho-hum, it was all in a day's work for a trusty IT professional. Which is true to a certain degree, of course, but some jobs are harder than others, man, and and and.

WHERE IS MY PARADE. WHERE ARE MY THRONE, CROWN, SCEPTRE, AND ORB. I WANT MY VALIDATION, DAMN IT.

Dude. When OUR department's IT guy has to come up here to sort out our electronic lives, we give him chocolate along with our gratitude. You're getting gypped.

I am going to present this comment to my boss with demands for edible compensation. >:O I have never got chocolate for my labors before.

Not to mention, you deserve something better than "meh" given that half the time folks want something like this done, they don't end up using the application more than twice. Ever.

[identity profile] tofty.livejournal.com 2007-06-13 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, God knows that this woman will at least use the hell out of this app. She used to use it frequently until a Windows update wiped it out -- so she doesn't even have to learn how to use it!

Which this part at least is highly gratifying, because oh, man, I do know what you mean. I want to kick people who insist on getting a thing at great expense to others and then don't use it.

WOOO! HUZZAH!! HAIL THE IT PROFESSIONAL!

*bows and bows*

[identity profile] tofty.livejournal.com 2007-06-13 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
THANK YOU. You are too wonderful to indulge me -- so wonderful that if you ever want me to install an application for you, I'll be happy -- happy, I say -- to do it.

Maybe they are planning to fax the award to you?

If that doesn't happen promptly, you could toy with them idly by reminding everyone that you have the power to give... and the power to take away...

*tosses rose petals as you march by*

Maybe they are planning to fax the award to you?

AHAHAHAHAHAH Nothing so far, but I'll keep you posted! And thankee, Miss, for the rose petals!

[identity profile] laurelwood.livejournal.com 2007-06-13 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, they're just playing you! They're out there now, installing a red carpet with a big throne at the end of it, and calling around to see where they can get musicians that play medieval-style music, and burying a haunch of something in the ground to slow-roast it for tomorrow's feast, and sorting rose petals, and bickering over whether you'd prefer faux ermine-lined or faux leopard-trimmed robes. Or that's the way it WOULD go in a perfect world.

It sucks having one's superpowers taken for granted. I am so disabled in the computer navigation department that if I were lucky enough to work in your office and had an issue that needed fixing, I would be properly amazed and grovel-y when you came to fix it. Not that that counts for anything, but still.

[identity profile] tofty.livejournal.com 2007-06-13 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder if I can request the kind of haunch? I'd like venison -- I'll be sure to let them know!

Heh -- I don't mind people's cavalier assumption that there's just nothing to it for someone who pretty much knows what they're doing, because here's a secret: for the most part it's true! It's just the times when it's really tough that it gets to me.

And my friend! You bow to no one. :O I'll be happy to fix your computer problems forever, with no groveling necessary.

*validates you*

I have no idea what you're talking about but I can see how frustrating it must be.

[identity profile] tofty.livejournal.com 2007-06-13 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It is, it is! And there's no need to understand what I did -- just that it took so much piddling, back-and-forth work that it made me want to stab out my eyes -- and everyone else's too.

[identity profile] somniesperus.livejournal.com 2007-06-13 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Forget ermine cloaks and coats! You can walk over *me* every time you cross a mud puddle!

[identity profile] tofty.livejournal.com 2007-06-13 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I would never! We will clutch each other close and leap together over any puddles we meet.
