Hahahahahahaaa! Yes, I did, the Orleans Parish Prison (The OPP, we ex-cons call it). I was arrested for unpaid traffic violations, and spent the night first chained to a staggering drunk, then in a holding cell filled with prostitutes and drug addicts (and frequently both together), and then in a cell which a shared with a seasoned old pro who held my hand through the worst bits (in exchange, she got my soap, toothpaste, and toothbrush when I got bailed out).

It was the worst night of my entire life -- but, really weirdly, everybody was incredibly nice, from the police officers to the prisoners. It was pretty clear that I was completely freaked out, in my quiet way, by the whole thing, I suppose. People kept asking if I was a teacher; it's funny, the things you remember.
