My brother and his wife have a boxer. She's about nine months old now, and the cutest thing! She's like a superball or something--just caroming off every surface, bouncing all over everyone. Well, a slobbery superball. And I mean that in the most loving way.
My parents have two rescued Greyhounds, and it's the same for them; they had to fill out extensive paperwork and go through interviews and fill out all these forms, and someone comes out to your house to make sure your home is suitable. I approve of this.
And I am so glad you get to see your mom's dog! I hope you get to have lots of cuddle-time with him. Cuddling a dog for fifteen minutes is better than any massage. (I wish I could cuddle you too--you are the best.)
